From Biblical to contemporary times, what has distinguished leaders is a walk with God. From Adam to Noah, to Abraham to Moses to Joshua, to Apostle Peter, John, Apostle Paul. Spirituality exemplified by a heart for God and character that depicts the fear of God has always been there hallmark.

What a great opportunity lies ahead of everyone of you to lay a foundation of honor in God by a walk with Him from youth. This is the truth, if you will put God first, He will make you first. The Bible gives a record of Enoch in Genesis 5:24. He had lived a normal life up until that time, when possibly as a result of an encounter with God, he chose to become a God seeker. It was then his distinction began. You shall be distinguished if you will serve God with your life and resources.

If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity and their years in pleasures.”Job 36:11

“Winning the heart of God is the number one task of every believer” – Dr. David Oyedepo. This where leadership starts from. This is where greatness starts from. You need a walk with God is your cause is to lead another. You need a working knowledge of God if your intention is to influence another with lasting results. He said further, “it is your connection with God that makes the journey of life great.”

Leadership can be defined as influencing others in fulfillment of some defined objectives.

What is effective leadership?

I would like to define it as leadership with outstanding positive impact.

What is spirituality?

It is the virtue of seeking God and His ways above else in order to come to a place of a living relationship with Him based on a knowledge of Him, and producing proofs of His grace as a result. Having said the above, it is vital in functioning in leadership within the Covenant Unversity setting, that you understand the vision of the institution itself. It is primarily to raise new generational leaders that function from a platform of love for God and a knowledge of His ways which is what spirituality is all about.

“Functioning from a platform of love for God and a knowledge of His ways which is what spirituality is all about.”

This implies, you can’t make a real success of being a leader in Covenant University without spirituality. It will take the grace and the wisdom of God to reform this generation and society from its degradation and ills. Other reformers have existed before you, especially in the Bible and this was their master key.

What is leadership?

Leadership is being responsible. Taking responsibility in ensuring what is right gets done, both personally and as regards your environment of influence.

What is leadership?

Leadership is being exemplary. Taking the lead in faith, in word, in conduct in character and in getting results.

1 Tim. 4:12

What is leadership?

Leadership is being inspirational.

A true spiritual leader is a servant of Jesus Christ and a disciple of His. It is his following after Jesus (His ways) and serving Him that actually earns him the privilege of being a spiritual leader.

Lk. 9:23

It si your faithfulness to God that gives you before God a platform to lead others. 2 Tim. 2:2.

This talks a lot about commitment, which at times can be very demanding. Christian leadership is really about Christian followership. Rom. 8:31.

Your getting to know Him and obey Him makes you an example for others to follow.

What Christian leadership is not:

(By Christian leadership we mean, Christ-like leadership)

It is not being in-charge

It is not wearing a title nor is it holding a position.

Christian Leadership is exemplified in service. Lk. 22:24-27.

I am leading as a child of God in spirituality when I am exploring ways by the wisdom of God to serve you better.

I am demonstrating spirituality and thus being an effective leader if I am obeying the commandment of love in fulfilling my leadership responsibilities. John 13:34, 35.

What is the commandment of love.

1 Cor. 13:1-8

Effective leadership therefore is serving in love.

Spirituality in leadership: a life of prayer

John 15:5

The earlier an individual recognizes that every good that comes from him, or will come from him is by the grace of God, the earlier he will be effective in leadership.

Prayer is what moves the hand of God to move the world.

You will become greater in influence and impact to men if you will depend absolutely on the grace of God.

Paul recognized this. 1 Cor. 15:10

Challenges will come, but prayer is your solution and remedy. This leadership team must be a praying team.

Spirituality: a passion to know more of God.

Spiritual – a God chaser.

Phil. 3:10 – Paul

Ex. 33:13 – Moses

1 Kings 3:9 – Solomon

The key to continuing impact in leadership in continuing growth. You grow in grace by growing in the knowledge and understanding of God’s ways. Therefore, become a God chaser.

Finally,

The conclusion of the whole matter,

  • “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of a leader”
  • Ecc. 12:13 (Paraphrased)
